In teaching there are many ways to demonstrate
the various techniques sometimes required to perfect a work of art. In this instance I chose pen and ink using a croquill pen to fulfill
that task. If you seriously look at this portrait of the “Dutchman and Boy”, you will see a variety of types of strokes – some light
and soft, others dark and bold. Close observation will show the trousers are nothing but tiny dots in which intensity determines
the desired effect. I felt using this media was an exemplary way to demonstrate how to provide shadow where needed to give character
to the faces. The finished product demonstrated a great tool to show that in art one does not necessarily need to use color to
develop beauty and character in the subject.
